Mucous retention cysts are the most common disorder of the minor salivary glands. An occlusion of the ducts of the minor salivary glands can lead to retention of mucus, and this change can in turn cause cyst formation. They are most commonly encountered in the lower labial mucosa but can affect any part of the oral mucosa and the involvement of the soft palate is rare. Salivary mucoceles may be divided into 2 types classic mucoceles and superficial mucoceles. The superficial mucoceles appear as thin-walled, usually multiple, bluish swellings that rupture easily, while the classic mucoceles are well-circumscribed cystic swellings usually covered by normal appearing oral mucosa. There are some patients of superficial soft palate mucoceles reported in the English language literature. Pediatric soft palate classic mucocele is even rarer, and has not been previously reported. Here, a case of single classic mucocele of soft palate in a child is reported for its rarity. Although mucoceles rarely occur in the soft palate, clinicians should consider it in the differential diagnosis of a cystic soft palate mass.
